Spring time is here again, and so is SPRING CLEANING! Here are 15 must-do spring cleaning tasks that you don’t want to forget…
I love spring time for lots of reasons. I mean, after a long winter is there anything better than cracking open the windows to warmer air, seeing flowers blooms, and having the sun set after dinner instead of before?
But one of the best things about spring is the sense of renewal. And in that spirit, I like to embark on spring cleaning. Refreshing our rooms, airing things out, and cleaning the nooks and crannies that we just don’t notice during winter. These tasks are maybe not our favorites, but once they’re done, our homes feel fresh and new.
If you’re wondering what to tackle for this year’s spring cleaning, here are 15 must-dos that will cover all your bases.
15 Spring Cleaning Must Dos
Clean the air vents and change the air filters
Running the heat all winter can cause quite a bit of dust to get trapped in these air filters, so make sure to change them out this spring. Give the area a good wipe down, too.
Empty your inbox and unsubscribe from unread emails
You didn’t think spring cleaning was only for the house, did you? Take this opportunity to clear out your inbox of junk and clutter. While you’re at it, unsubscribe to all the emails that you get that don’t serve you at this time.
Spring clean all the baseboards, window sills, and doorframes
We hardly notice them until we get up close, but then, wow. Fingerprints, dirt, and other marks can get all over our windowsills, doorframes, and baseboards, especially if you have kids or pets. Use warm soapy water to clean them up.
Organize your pantry
This is especially important if you have a smaller pantry and things are just shoved in willy-nilly. Organize the contents into an easy system everyone can work with and dispose of anything expired that’s hiding in the back.
Spring clean the grease trap on your stove and inside the oven
This part of the stove is a collector of all the grease from many meals past. Soak it in a pan of hot soapy water to make wiping it easier. Also clean the inside of the oven where crumbs and cheese drips can burn with each use.
Discard unnecessary paperwork
Even in today’s paperless world, we still all have tons of paper. School paperwork, junk mail, and other miscellaneous paper can easily accumulate, so spring clean those piles and recycle as much as possible.
Donate toys that are no longer used
Spring cleaning is a great time to go through your kids’ toys and donate the ones they no longer play with or have outgrown. My kids are usually ready to do this in spring because they’re already thinking ahead to summer and outdoor activities, like pool time.
Dust the refrigerator coils
Those hard-to-reach coils work hard to keep your fridge and food cold, so take the time to clean them off. It will keep your refrigerator running smoothly and avoid possible problems later.
Wash the windows
Isn’t funny how spring sunshine can come through your windows and show off all the fingerprints and dust you never knew were there? Grab some Windex, ammonia, or white vinegar and give those windows a wash that will have the sun shining through.
Spring clean all the small appliances
Now’s a good time to spring clean the appliances. Break out the toaster ovens, coffeemakers, instant pots, and microwaves and give them a thorough cleaning. You’ll appreciate your clean kitchen even more once this is done.
Go through clothes and donate unworn items
Check those closets. Look for clothing that hasn’t been worn in a while, didn’t come off the hanger all winter, or doesn’t look like something you’d want to wear this summer, and donate it. Switch out the kids’ seasonal clothes for the warmer weather stuff and donate the things that won’t fit next year.
Defrost your freezer
What a pain in the butt, right? But the frost that accumulates in your freezer can make it harder for the device to keep the temperature down and air circulating. So transfer the freezer items to coolers, defrost, and clean the freezer out. Then restock it. You’ll be glad you did.
Clear out your phone
You know you’ve got 200 tabs open in your safari browser and tons of apps you don’t even use. Spring cleaning is a good time to close out and clear out the unnecessary things that are taking up phone space. And now that you’re feeling brave, let’s dive into the 15,000 photos stored there, too…
Spring clean all the bedding
All of it, buddy. Even the musty smelling stuff in the linen closet. Take an opportunity to clean out the linen closet of things you don’t need anymore, and maybe stash some potpourri inside to freshen things up. Plus, all those clean beds will make for a good night’s sleep.
Vacuum and clean the carpets
Once you’ve done all the basic cleaning you plan to do, vacuum all the carpets to get rid of the dust and dirt that gets tracked in all winter. If you can, also wash the carpets, yourself or professionally, to really get that clean home feel.
I hope this list of spring cleaning must-dos helps you tackle the important stuff this season. Spring cleaning can be a lot of work, but the feeling you get once it’s done and the way your home feels can’t be beat!
