Are you looking for books that are perfect for your 4th grade girl? Here are my suggestions for the best books that will grow her mind and heart during these tumultuous tween years.
The end of the elementary school years is an interesting time. Kids have now entered the tween years and are growing closer to their teenaged selves and farther from their childhood.
You might have noticed that your 4th grader’s reading selections have changed as well. They may be reading more advanced and complicated books, exploring themes that weren’t on their radar last year.
While exploration is good, it’s important to help your kids choose books that are not too mature for their understanding, contain characters with good moral character, and lead them in the right direction. Unfortunately, a lot of YA fiction can cover a broad range and may not be separated from the more advanced themes that are geared toward teenagers.
If your 4th grade girl loves books as much as my daughter does, then you may be struggling to keep up with her voracious reading habit. That’s not a bad thing, but it does put you in a place where you are monitoring a lot of books. I have some great suggestions below, but I also recommend checking out these websites for reviews and warnings that can help you both make good choices about her book lists.

Max Einstein by James Patterson
Follow kid-genius Max as she solves mysteries, thwarts The Corporation, and uses her science knowledge to help the world.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
This is a timeless tale of Mary, Colin, and Dickon—three children who find a shared love in nature and who blossom as they bring the forbidden secret garden back to life.
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Orphaned Anne is full of spunk and chatter, and your 4th grader will love reading about her adventures and mishaps as she adapts to small-town life.
The Little House Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Start with Little House in the Big Woods and follow Laura as she travels with her family across the US and endures trials and triumphs. These pioneer stories were fascinating to my children!
Rad Girls Can: Stories of Bold, Brave, and Brilliant Young Women by Kate Schatz
Every girl needs a hero, and this book is full of great examples of modern and historical girls who met challenges and excelled. This is a wonderful inspirational read and perfect if your 4th grade girl prefers true stories to fiction.
Sweet Home Alaska by Carole Estby Dagg
This story is based on the actual settling of Alaska in the 1930s. Terpsichore is a girl who will do whatever she can to convince her family that Alaska is the place for them. We just loved her references to the Little House series since we’d just read them.
Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald
My 4th grader loved these stories of Judy and her many moods and adventures. Each book is fun and different, and they are entertaining reads.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
This prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy is a great start to the series and follows Bilbo Baggins on a adventure to steal the hoard of a fierce dragon. For another good introduction to Tolkien’s writing and illustrations, try Letters from Father Christmas.
Trailblazers: 33 Women in Science Who Changed the World by Rachel Swaby
This will surely spark your 4th grader’s interest in science and the world. Full of stories of great women in science, it encourages exploration and curiosity in the world around us.
The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
Start with The Sorcerer’s Stone and follow Harry as he makes friends and enemies, explores the world of magic, and fights against evil wizards.
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Start with The Magician’s Nephew and your 4th grader will be introduced to the magical world of Narnia and the fight between good and evil. This whole series is amazing!
The Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner
With over 100 titles in the series, these mysteries are always a delight. My kids loved solving the mysteries along with the four Alden children—and trying to beat them at it, if they could!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Your 4th grader will love the wild world of Wonka and the crazy adventures that a group of children experience while touring the famous chocolate factory.
The Railway Children by E. Nesbit
This classic story centers around a family that moves near a railway station, and the adventures and people that they encounter.
Most of these titles and series are fictional, but I encourage you to explore nonfiction with your 4th grader. Now is the perfect time to get her interested in real-life heroines and her own purpose in life.
I hope these books are a good starting point for you and the 4th grade girl in your life. May they entertain her, encourage her, enlighten her, and excite her love of reading.
Happy reading!
