What we fill our hearts with, we fill our lives with. If you fill your heart with treasure, then you will speak treasure into the lives of others.
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)
Have you ever noticed how the company we keep affects us?
If you spend the day watching reality TV or complaining to your friend about all that’s wrong in your life, when your kids come home from school, aren’t you a little snippier with them? Do you find yourself snapping and impatient because your heart is full of criticism and examples of selfish behavior?
I see this in my own life and in my children’s. When I choose Facebook over my Bible, I miss out on the chance to fill my heart with treasure. Instead, it’s full of envy, judgement, and guilt.
I limit my kids’ TV time because even though the shows they watch are appropriate, I notice that the mindless watching creates a selfish attitude that bleeds into their interactions with me and each other.
But when they help with chores, when we do devotionals together, and when they help each other with classwork, their attitudes are one of service. They are helpful, patient, and respectful.
Fill your heart with treasure, not trash
What we surround ourselves with, what we fill our hearts with, are the things we choose to fill our lives with. If we fill our hearts with treasure, we’ll see that treasure in the words we speak, the thoughts we have, and the attitude we bring to each day.
When we choose to absorb trash and negativity into our hearts, we will put out the very same. Our spouses and children will then be surrounded by it, and so the cycle goes.
Today, choose to fill your heart and life with treasure. Choose the Bible over social media. Give compliments instead of complaints. Choose what builds you and others up, not what tears you down.
Guard your heart from bad influences and only fill it with the treasures in life, none of the trash. You’ll soon see the difference in how you feel and act, and in the actions of others around you.
As Paul wrote in Philippians 4:8:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
