We are not just called to listen to the word of God, we are called to action. How can we get out of our heads and put ourselves into action today?
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
As an introvert and planner, I am often in my head. I hear and process, make lists and plans. I am often tricked into thinking I am actually doing something just because I am thinking something.
Does this ever happen to you?
Planning and thinking aren’t bad things. In fact, when we listen to scripture, it’s important to process what we hear in sermons and Bible studies. We should plan how we will use this new knowledge in our everyday lives. Contemplating God’s word helps us better understand the message He has for us.
But at some point, we must do. We are all called to action at some point in time, if not many. How we use our newfound knowledge from what we hear is the true act of obedience.
Listen and then act
One of my favorite podcasts was one by Kat Lee called Inspired to Action. This faith-based show spoke to my overworked mom heart by feeding it with life-giving scripture, practical advice, and most of all, a call to action. She knew the value wasn’t just in the listening, but also the doing.
How can we take ourselves out of our heads and put our bodies into motion?
One way is to put our plans into action. When we read about helping our brothers and sister in Christ, it’s time to call outreach programs to see about volunteering. If we listen to a sermon about not gossiping, it’s time to walk away from the office watercooler before we say something we shouldn’t.
Contemplation is an important part of our faith, but may our contemplation and inspiration from the Holy Spirit move us toward action as well as understanding. God doesn’t just want us to know Him. He wants us to be His hands and feet on the ground, acting as His light for others.
So the next time you are listening to God’s word, pay special attention to how you can act it out in your everyday life. And then do it.
Have a blessed Monday!

I love James 1:22! I once learned that verse through a kids’ memory verse music album and I have this catchy tune stuck in my head every time I read it. It’s beautiful. And a great reminder to put our faith into action.

I love the idea of scripture put to song. It helps the memory so much. My kids sing a 10 Commandments song all the time because it’s so catchy. I’m glad you liked the verse in today’s post.
