“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
I have always loved this verse. Especially the last sentence.
So often we have to make choices in our lives. We can choose one way or another, the old way or the new way, the wrong way or the right way.
We have to choose each day if we will serve one god or another. Will we chase money or fame or adoration or some other idol? Or will we chase after the one and only true God?
Right before his death, Joshua lays this choice out to the Israelites, going over the history, the rules, and the mistakes that were made in the past. He makes it clear that serving God will require the forgoing of all false idols.
And he plainly states who he will serve.
We are surrounded by sinful behaviors and temptations. Many make the wrong choices, including us. But this verse, that sentence, can be a mantra that we repeat to ourselves when life puts us in the position to choose.
Idol or God? God or sin?
Say it to yourself: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” We. Will. Serve. The. Lord.
As you go through your week, repeat this to yourself. Let it be your guide, your motivation, and your protection when a situation arises that could make your falter in your faith.
The Israelites told Joshua that they would serve the Lord. So will we.
Have a blessed Monday!
