If you prefer things to be clear cut and simple, it can be really frustrating to encounter disorder, confusion, and ambiguity in life. But those mixed messages aren’t coming from God…
“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)
I know we always talk about God working in mysterious ways and accepting what we don’t understand because God’s ways are not our ways. But does God’s wisdom and plan pertain to confusion in our everyday life?
I’m talking about the ambiguity we encounter on a regular basis. The times we have to make decisions, fight against our own inner demons, and choose a course of action that may or may not be the best.
Is this person “the one?” Is it okay to watch this show/movie or read this book? Does the salary from this promotion make up for less time with my family?
Should I be giving this homeless man cash? Is spanking my kids wrong? Should I get vaccinated?
Our days can be spent with minds whirling as we try to figure out what to do when we encounter thorny issues. What do we do? What should we do? Why isn’t God giving me a clear path?
Is God sending us mixed messages?
God sends us peace and a path, never chaos
Chaos and confusion aren’t something that God gives His people. Those come from our conflicted and sinful nature and from the broken world we live in.
We’re often confused by what we should do because we are trying to see every detail, consider every consequence, and try to see into the future. But this isn’t something we can do.
So instead of making things complicated, why not simplify them. Can we answer the questions that plague us by answering them with God’s Word?
The Bible is full of God’s wisdom and directives. Almost any situation or ambiguity can become clear when we hold it up to His light. We can make decisions in the context of His commands.
In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus is asked what the greatest commandment is. He answers that the first is to love God, and the second is to love others.
So ask yourself: Does this help me love God? Is this a way to love others? Pray on this and ask God to help you through the confusion.
Mixed messages and ambiguity are a tool of Satan, a way to shake our faith. But God never wavers from His promises or His plans. May you seek Him and receive a clear view of the path forward.
Have a blessed Monday!
