February is a month devoted to love, but is there any love greater than that of a parent for their child – and yet God chose to send His Son because God so loved the world… because God so loved us.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
I talk about love all the time. I love this show. Or I love that color. And more times than I can count, I love you!
But my love for things, and even my love for my favorite people, pales in comparison to the love God has for you and me.
God sent his only Son down to earth to live a humble life among peasants, experiencing all the hardship and seeing all the sin of the world.
He didn’t send Jesus to live as a prince. There was nothing easy or safe about His life here. And His death was nothing like what you would expect for a heavenly king.
On a cross. Among criminals. Tortured. Beaten. Mocked. And God knew that it was going to happen – and it was going to happen to His Son in order to save His people.
For God So Loved the World…Loved Us
We are His people. And He loves us enough to send Jesus to the cross in order to bring us home at the end of our lives. To bring us to our eternal home in heaven – with Him.
I may use the word love loosely for the things I really like. I may use it for the people I love with all my heart. But even that overwhelming love I have as a parent can’t compare to the love God has for us.
And I’m glad. I don’t think I could fit a love of that magnitude into my feeble little human heart. And I am glad I will never have to make that sacrifice for the rest of the world.
But most of all, I’m glad that I am a child of God, and that love is mine for the taking.
And it’s yours, too.
I hope you remember that today as you pass Valentine’s Day displays in stores and see red hearts on windows. Love is spoken of casually in our culture, but real love, true love, is the kind that God offers to us. That He sacrificed for us. For God so loved the world…
Have a blessed Monday!
