Life can feel scary when it’s out of control. But just because we’re not controlling things doesn’t mean God isn’t. We just need to trust…
“In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:10)
Not being in control is one of my least favorite things. I like to think I am queen of my domain, masterfully juggling all the schedules, rides, and schooling in our family.
But the minute something goes amiss – stomach bug, broken washer, financial setback – I am reminded how little power I actually have.
And I need that reminder. I need to know that my mastery of a situation is merely an illusion. That life can change in an instant and all the planning in the world will not help me avoid it.
For some people, realizing this would be devastating. It would leave them feeling adrift, upset, and perhaps grasping even harder at that illusion of control. How could I blame them? Being out of control is scary.
But it doesn’t have to be. Just because we’re not in control doesn’t mean that no one else is.
God is in control
We may not be in control, but God is. Over every part of our world, God holds power. Despite the brokenness of the world we live in, God is still ruler of all.
Maybe I’m not in charge of the things that happen in my life. But it’s foolish and prideful to think I should be. How could I possibly do a better job than God? He who knows and sees all, how could I make a better plan or decision than Him?
I really can’t. Which means that I need to lean on my trust in Him to get me through all the ups and downs life hands me. I can’t control the outcomes, but I can control how I handle them.
Instead of striving to exert more control, I need to cede it to the Lord. When I ask for guidance, rather than lean on my own understanding, I need to trust in God to have control of my life, not me.
And while this can be difficult, especially as we push back against our human desire and pride to be the one in the lead, life will be more peaceful and manageable with God in the driver’s seat. We don’t need to be in control because God is.
Have a blessed Monday!

A great reminder of who is really in control! That is hard to remember sometimes.
