In a world where promises are quickly given and often broken, God stands apart because He always keeps His promises. No matter how we fail, He never does.
“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)
Once upon a time, our word was our bond. People took pride in their determination to be true to the promises they made. But even if their promises to others, in the form of business deals and marriage vows, were kept, there were still plenty that weren’t. We’re human and no one can bat a .1000 in the promise-keeping department.
Nowadays, believing in someone’s word is a sign of naiveté. Lies and broken promises are everyday occurrences and barely cause a batted eyelash. From standing up a friend and not returning a phone call to cheating on a spouse and stealing from the boss, broken promises are everywhere.
That’s our broken world. But it’s not the only world. And we’re not the only one who makes promises.
God Always Keeps His Promises
God isn’t like us. I know you know that, but sometimes we have to really make ourselves remember. When we read the Bible, if God makes a covenant, that covenant stands—no matter what.
In the Old Testament, God made a covenant with David. He promised that his throne would be established forever. Generation after generation. Sin after sin. Despite the many failings of David and his descendants, God never rescinded or broke that promise. And centuries later, when Jesus was born into David’s lineage, that promise was fulfilled.
When you open your Bible and read that Jesus died to save us, that’s God’s promise. When you read that there will never be another flood like the one Noah survived, that’s God’s promise. And when you read that Jesus will come back, defeat Satan, and remake the world—that is God’s promise.
Unlike the promises that we make, the ones that may or may not be kept for any number of reasons, God always keeps His promises.
His holy book is full of truth for you and me. Open it up and see what promises God has made to you today.
Have a blessed Monday!
