One of the best things about love is that it can create a rosier picture of people – love covers our imperfections so that others can love us even at our least lovable.
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8)
Have you ever had one of those days when you felt that no one could love you? Maybe you were yelling, or being snarky, or were just plain down and felt no one would want to be around an Eeyore like you?
And then someone did. A friend, a spouse, a child. Someone wanted to be with you because despite everything you might have said or done, you were still loved. Wanted. Perfect.
That’s love in action. Not just the love when we are at our best, but the love we receive and give when we’re not.
Love covers our imperfections
It’s not that our bad behaviors and attitudes are invisible to the people who love us. No, they likely see them all. But they choose to look beyond them to the people we are inside. They look beyond the outside, straight to our hearts. And their love for us covers over our imperfections.
God sees beyond the outside, too. Not just to love us, but to forgive and accept us no matter what. How lucky we are to have a God who models perfect love, an example to follow in our own relationships!
If we can remember how good it feels to be loved in our least lovable moments, then we can share that love with others on their worst days.
If we can remember what it feels like to be loved by a perfect God, we can offer our best version of that love to the people who need it most.
Love covers over our imperfections so that we can see into the heart and act as a conduit for God’s forgiving love to others here on earth.
Love isn’t just our privilege. It’s also our purpose. So, let’s live it out today.
Have a blessed Monday!
