When bad things happen, where is your safe haven? Where do you go and who do you seek out when you need comfort, protection, and help?
“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.” (Psalm 118:8)
Safe haven. We all yearn for that place where we can go to feel safe and secure. Sometimes it isn’t even a place, but a person who makes us feel protected.
As a child, I can remember going to my parents’ room after a nightmare woke me and laying a pillow and blanket beside their bed. In college, I can remember listening to a friend tell me stories on the phone when my car broke down on the interstate at night and I was scared and alone, needing the comfort of a familiar voice.
And as an adult, I can remember calling out to God when I felt like my heart was breaking.
Over the years, I have searched and found safe havens among friends and families, in libraries and churches. But only one safe haven ever gave me the peace and comfort I needed to survive my deepest wounds.
Our ultimate safe haven
As much as the people in our lives try, they can’t always protect us. They aren’t able to heal our wounds and bandage our emotional injuries. They will try, but they’re naturally limited.
Places can feel like safe havens, but they are only temporary. Despite our pain and fear, we aren’t meant to hide ourselves away from life in a self-induced prison.
There is only one safe haven that can both heal and protect, that can travel with us no matter where we go. God alone is our safe haven.
He is our refuge in times of trouble. He can wrap us in a blanket of His peace when we feel broken and lost in the chaos of our emotions.
God can work on our hearts, healing hurts from the inside out and helping us grow stronger and whole again.
He is a safe place to land when our world becomes troubled. He welcomes us and our struggles, His love a balm to the most bruised soul.
If you are going through a hard time in your life, lean on your loved ones and find a place that makes you feel safe. But remember to find your rest and support in the Lord, who will provide the safest haven of them all. You need only to ask.
Have a blessed Monday!
