“The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.” (Lamentations 3:25)
Hope is something most of us have. We hope for small things, like clear skies when we’ve planned an outdoor party. And for big things, like happiness for a newly married couple.
Often it’s based on some evidence. A positive weather forecast. The caring and healthy ways that couple has dealt with each other in the past.
But what about when we don’t have any good signs? When there is no knowledge of the plan, no indicators of the results. Or worse, indicators that point toward a negative outcome.
The follow-up tests when the doctor wants to check to be sure. A teenager who stops talking to his parents. The interviewer that still hasn’t returned your email.
How do we hope when we have nothing to pin it on?
Putting our hope in the right place
Being logical people, we want to pin our hopes on the things we can see, feel, or touch. We want to believe the science, our intuition, and the anecdotes relayed by friends.
But the only right place to put them is in the Lord. We may not be able to touch or see God as the disciples and prophets of old could, but we can feel His Spirit within us. And His powerful plan.
When we put our faith in God and His plan for us, we can trust that He will work all things out for good. The diagnoses, relationship woes, and instability we face becomes less daunting because we know He is on our side.
There’s nothing wrong with hoping for good weather, happiness, or success. So long as the hope we have for those things is tempered by faith. When we seek the Lord, He answers our knock. And that faith will take us from crossed fingers to many blessings.
Have a blessed Monday!
