We tend to remember the things that are important… so why are we so often forgetting God? How do we place Him at the center of our lives instead of on the edges?
“Can a young woman forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding sash? Yet my people have forgotten me for countless days.” (Jeremiah 2:32)
What is the most important thing to you?
I’m sure most of you immediately thought of a person rather than a thing. Me, too. But let’s go back to things. What is your most important possession.
For me, sadly, it’s probably my phone. I use it for so many things, from conversations to directions to my schedule to drafts of my writing. It’s always with me.
Now imagine losing that thing. Forgetting it in a friend’s car or leaving it in a restaurant. Panic, right?
Me, I am more likely to leave my car keys somewhere than my phone. I always check that it’s with me, both for all it holds as well as the monetary value.
We remember the things that matter. My phone. Your (fill in the blank). A woman, her jewelry. A bride, her gown.
So how can we forget God?
Remembering God despite our busy lives
When our lives are busy, it’s too easy to put God on the side to handle more “immediate” issues. The boss who keeps emailing, the child whose crying, the laundry that’s overflowing. All of these demand attention now.
But God doesn’t demand. He waits. Patiently, He watches us make our choices, and He waits for us to remember Him.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we missed God as much as our most cherished possession? If we reached for Him as quickly as we reach to make sure our belongings are still with us? That we sighed with relief and comfort when we felt His presence as we do when our favorite things are right there?
There is no reason we can’t.
God may not be banging on the door of our hearts with the same verve as a toddler in mid-tantrum, but He is nonetheless a jealous God. One who wants to be a part of our lives, to be remembered.
If our faith is important, if building a relationship with God is something we want, then we need to make it our priority. Despite the busy schedules, we need to remember God.
His faithfulness. His love, His guidance. His sacrifice. Holding Him at the forefront of our minds, letting Him guide our choices and steps each day, can help us bring him back to the center of our lives where He is meant to be,
It’s okay to like our things and our people. Each is a tool or a blessing from Him. But we must remember Him above all else. Because of everything in our lives, He really is the most important.
And unforgettable.
Have a blessed Monday!
