“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
I do a lot of things backward.
I make spaghetti and then make the sauce, letting the noodles turn into a lumpy cold mass while they wait.
I put on my kids’ socks and snow boots, then stare at the snow pants that are still waiting to be pulled on.
I buy Christmas gifts before asking what people want, then just cross my fingers that I guessed right.
And I also try to handle things on my own, leaning on my own “wisdom” and plans. And when that doesn’t work, I go to God for the Hail Mary (pun intended).
But in this verse, I am reminded that if I come to God first, if I seek His will and His wisdom, then I don’t need to worry about the rest. He will supply me with everything I need.
All I have to do is go to Him first.
This lesson is one that is learned over and over, sometimes multiple times a day. I like to fix things and I like to think I’m fairly good at handling crises.
But my abilities are only as strong as my connection to God throughout those crises. Without involving Him, without praying for His help and His way, I’m using my least effective tool while the best one sits on the sidelines.
It’s like bailing out a waterlogged rowboat with a spoon, while the bucket sits off to the side. Or like cashing a paycheck to pay the bills when the winning lottery ticket is tucked into the back of your wallet.
In all things, from finances to basic necessities, to relationships and career paths, if we seek God and follow where He leads us, we will have everything we need and more.
Have a blessed Monday!
