Quiet time with God in the morning isn’t about the time or the place or what accessories you bring to it – it’s about the intention…
“He who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find Him the rest of the day.” –John Bunyan, English writer and preacher
You can’t talk about faith practices without the subject of quiet time with God coming up. Usually that discussion involves the books and devotions used. It’s about the flavor of tea or coffee drank. And it usually involves an early hour, when the house is quiet and there’s only you and God.
I’ll be honest and say that I check all of these boxes. I have my books, my blanket, and my tea, all ready pre-dawn. But the same things that make this time extra special for me may be what’s holding you back from quiet time with God.
If you’re not a morning person, you listen to others talk about this routine with discomfort and disbelief. Who gets up that early on purpose?! Does God only speak to us in the early hours of the day?
No, He doesn’t. And knowing that God is as ready to meet you at 5pm as He is at 5am can make all the difference in faith and prayer life.
Start as you mean to proceed
More than a few morning God Times have fallen by the wayside as we try to conform our lives and rhythms to those belonging to someone else. We start out strong with our morning routine, only to have it fail after a few days, weeks, or months.
Psalm 143:8 says, “Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.“
But if your morning starts at 10am or even 2pm, there is no reason you can’t have your own quiet time with God.
It doesn’t matter what time the clock says or what drink you’re sipping. Or if you’re wearing pajamas or gym clothes or a uniform. The accessories make no difference to God. He just wants you to seek Him.
Starting your day, regardless of time, sets the rest of your day to rights. It puts your mind and soul on the same wavelength, making it easier to live out your faith in all the little decisions and actions that fill your day.
As you start this week, see when you could start your own quiet time if one hasn’t worked in the past. What fits your daily rhythms? What routine would be sustainable so you can make it a practice to start your day with Him?
Remember that God doesn’t care about the surroundings or hour, just the intention.
Have a blessed day!
