“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
In life, we tend to make things more complicated than they have to be. We embellish stories, buy gadgets for easy tasks, and start an argument over a few thoughtless words.
We do it with our faith, too. We take part in complex rituals and think that the more we do, the closer we are to eternal salvation. We judge those who aren’t attending church as often as us, aren’t reading the Bible every day, or aren’t actively spreading the good news. We worry about those people and their souls.
But what we aren’t seeing, past all of our works and adherence to the law, is that God only asks us to believe, to know that Jesus is the Son of God, who died for our sins and was raised from the dead by God to sit at His right hand in heaven. Our heart is all that matters because our acts can never measure up. God’s grace is the bridge that carries our imperfect selves the rest of the way to heaven. But you have to believe to accept the gift of that grace.
So, let’s not do good works because we think that they will earn our place in heaven. Let’s do good because it pleases and praises God. And because caring for others is a testament to the generosity and grace of our Heavenly Father. But as for salvation, speak and believe in your heart the good news of Jesus Christ. And you will be saved.
Have a blessed Monday!
