“But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.” (Exodus 23:22)
Everybody wants an advocate. That person who has our best interests at heart and our back when things are going wrong.
We look for it in our siblings and friends when we are kids. We look for it in our spouse when we marry. We look for it in our boss when we’re moving up in our careers. And we search for it in our community and schools when our children are under the care of others.
We all want that best friend who will hug us when we cry, dance with us when we’re happy, and give the stink eye to anyone who dares give it to us first.
But God is the advocate whom we seek. More than any one person or group, He can do all that we are searching for.
He rejoices in our victories and comforts us through our trials. He stands against our enemies and those who have done us wrong.
This is especially important because we spend so much time thinking about those who have hurt us. We dwell on our pain, on what we think is fair, and on getting even; we make sure others are on our side.
But rather than fantasizing about petty revenge and convincing everyone that we’re right, we can instead leave it in the hands of God. Allow Him to mete out punishment.
Let’s not allow hurt or anger to drag us into sin. Judgement belongs to God.
He is the friend that sees into our hearts and loves us regardless. He is our Heavenly Father and He stands with us.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
No one is more powerful and wise than Him. What more could we ask for in an advocate?
Have a blessed Monday!
