A new year means the chance at a new self. But with God, we always have the opportunity for renewal…
“To be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:23-24)
As an Upholder, I always relish the beginning of the new year. With all its goals and new planners, it’s the ultimate in fresh starts. There is something freeing about being able to look at the year ahead and see all the opportunities and options.
Creating a new self is not a new idea. Plenty of people have been looking at the new year as a chance to change for the better, letting go of bad habits and bringing in new ones. But amidst the weight loss goals, the quitting smoking goals, and the new career goals, there needs to be space for our faith-based goals.
There should be a goal that guides us toward Him and living in harmony with His righteousness. Leading a life that is as close to Jesus as possible should be a goal now and always. While we may never reach that pinnacle of holiness, we must try our best each day.
A renewal of self is always available
Waiting until the new year isn’t necessary when it comes to creating a new self. We are welcomed to make changes and refresh ourselves every day of the year by God.
He wants us to come to Him and look for refreshment, to listen for guidance, and to lean on His strength when we need it to make changes. Putting on a new self isn’t always an easy thing to do and we will need God in order for us to become more righteous, little by little.
So work hard on those goals that have you drinking more water, working hard at a dream, and spending more time with those you love. But remember that this is also a great time to work toward being more righteous and more in tune with your God. Let go of the old self and embrace the new self, with God by your side.
Have a blessed Monday!
