“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
I tend to worry. It’s the flip side of being a planner, always thinking I have it under control when really I have no control at all. So I worry, and I fret, and I wring my hands.
But worrying is pointless. Not only that, it erodes faith. Anxiety over the future and about things that are out of our control replaces the peace we would have if we trusted God and His plan.
The future is not our domain. The present is. Each day, we wake up to a new set of circumstances, which may seem the same as yesterday or may be vastly different, but either way, they are ours to deal with. What happens tomorrow is firmly in the hands of God. Including whether there is a tomorrow.
While that might be discomfiting for some of us, including my fellow planners, the truth is that letting God guide our paths and plan our futures leads to an infinitely more satisfying life than the one we would come up with on our own.
So if worry has become your constant companion, if you are struggling with a situation that is causing your mind to spin, take a deep breath (or three) and let it out with a prayer:
“Father God, please take these worries from me and allow me to rest in your presence and strength. May your spirit guide my next step, and the next, and the next until I reach the place where you want me to be. Thank you for your love and wisdom, which carries me through these trying times. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
Let’s worry about today’s troubles and leave the rest to God.
Have a worry-free Monday!
