“What feeds me, affects me.” –Lysa TerKeurst, Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions
My children were all born with milk allergies, among other things. Each one would cry and writhe, hardly sleep, and generally be miserable until we realized what was wrong and cut out the offending substance from their diet (or, actually, my diet).
Most of the kids grew out of these intolerances, but not all. Even now, I have to limit the milk in the diet of the baby or she wakes up constantly, needing her belly rubbed as she twists around uncomfortably.
What we eat affects how we feel. When I eat junk food, I feel sluggish and guilty. When my meals are balanced and nutritious, I have energy and feel good about my choices. Our emotions are the same.
I loved this quote from Lysa TerKeurst because it stuck in my head for days. I found myself remembering it, considering it, and repeating it. Because we are always feeding ourselves. We feed our bodies, our minds, and our souls. And what we take in affects how we feel, think, act, and live.
What are you feeding yourself? Are you living on a regular diet of fast food, gossip, and reality TV? Or are you feeding yourself with more natural foods, reading books that make you think, and taking in a steady supply of God’s Word?
As you go through your week, repeat this to yourself and consider whether what you take in reflects how you want to feel. Toxic relationships, hurtful self-talk, and bad habits can all affect us in a bad way.
Does it fill you with negativity or fill you with light? Does it bring hope or leave you wallowing in bitterness? Does it give you strength or steal it?
I know it can be hard to always eat the right thing, do the right thing, and say the right thing. So let’s ask God to guide our choices throughout the week, to give us the wisdom to choose well in what we feed ourselves. Our reward will be light and peace in our lives.
Have a beautiful Monday!
