“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” (Psalm 143:8)
I have probably seen this verse half a dozen times, but when I recently read it in Kat Lee’s Hello Mornings, it really stuck with me.
I wrote it down, added it to my verse memorization app, and found myself repeating it in the mornings as she suggested in her book. Today, I feel God was putting these words front and center in my mind for just such a morning as this.
It was 5:30am, I hadn’t even opened my eyes yet, and I was already worn out. My 3-year-old was making noise, wanting to go have breakfast, and talking far above a whisper next to my bed. All this while his younger sister lay on my arm, finally sleeping after a restless night spent fighting a fever and cough.
Morning routines are wonderful. I love them and know from experience that even 10 minutes alone before the rest of the day begins can take the craziest day and put it into the manageable category.
But there are some mornings that start even before the routine. Like with sick kids and a reluctantly potty-training toddler who has to use the bathroom, but really doesn’t want to, so he asks for cereal instead.
If you’ve ever been awoken by an insistent child, a ringing telephone, or an agitated spouse, you know that your mornings can start before you’re ready. So, this verse is perhaps the most perfect one to whisper to yourself as you jump headfirst into your day.
This morning, I prayed this verse and then whispered, “Dear God, I’m tired and already a little frayed around the edges. Please show me your love and what you want me to do today. I trust you.”
When you are tired, sometimes you just need to know that someone else is taking care of things. This verse reminds me that God is there with a warm and loving hug and a plan for my day. He has me and will take care of me.
He has you, too. If you’re feeling frazzled this morning or just need to feel a little less alone, repeat this verse to yourself. Stick it on your computer or mirror with a Post-it. But remind yourself that God is with you, He has a plan for you, and you’re not going through this day on your own.
Have a beautiful Monday!
