Sometimes we let our expectations get ahead of us, making it hard for us and others to live up to the level of perfection we expect. But if God can offer grace, why can’t we?
“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18)
Like many planners and perfectionists, I have expectations. In fact, I think I have expectations for my expectations.
But that type of thinking often leaves me overwhelmed, frustrated, and disappointed.
Perfection is an impossible goal to reach, and the more we try, the more frustrated we become. Some may give up and decide good enough is good enough.
Others, though, will hold tight and not give an ounce of grace. Not to others. Not to themselves.
This is no way to live. And certainly not the way God wants us to live.
So why is it so hard to accept grace? And so difficult to offer it?
Grace is the antidote to perfectionism
God sees all the missteps we make. He knows our sins, our flaws, and our regrets. But while we are still subject to the consequences of our actions and choices, He is also willing to be gracious.
God is compassionate and knows we are not perfect. But rather than be disappointed in us, He offers grace and mercy when we come to Him.
With an example like that, how can we not try to do the same?
With no perfect people, our relationships will disappoint us. Our lives will go in directions we never expected. We’ll find that things never seem to end up as perfect as we planned them.
But if we let go of the idea of perfection, and instead focus on grace, we can live in a more peaceful place. One where forgiveness and trust dominate. One where mistakes are opportunities to learn. And where love is flawed, but beautiful.
God offers us grace every day. Today, let’s accept that gift. And maybe pass it on to someone else who needs it, too.
Have a blessed Monday!
