What are your passions? Are you devoting time and attention to the things that matter to you, the things that you were made for? Here’s why you need to…
“Living a life with no room for your passionate pursuits prevents you from fully living out the life God has for you.” – Jessica N. Turner, My Fringe Hours
Have you been giving your passions the attention that you want? So often we set aside the things that we love. We let go of what makes our hearts sing for the more urgent and more “important.”
It’s easy to sideline our passions and hobbies. They pale against the things that keep us going (grocery shopping), pay the bills (a job you get paid to do), or need doing now (fixing the running toilet).
But just because there is no urgency or physical need to do something, doesn’t mean that there is no emotional or spiritual need for it.
I have found that my writing feeds something inside of me that better paying jobs cannot. I hope that one day I can make a living at writing, but if I never do, I won’t be disappointed. Because that’s not why I write.
I write because God put words and stories in me that are just waiting to come out, and I blog because I felt God called me to do it. I pursue my passion because it feels like a piece of me, and to deny it is to deny how God created me.
Making room for your passions
Are you trying to find time for your passions? Are you struggling to make room in a busy schedule or busy family for what you were called to do?
It’s not easy to prioritize things that others may not see as a priority. My children are a good example of this. They are still learning that when I sit down to write, I need to be quiet and focused. I can’t mediate disagreements or make snacks—at least not for an hour or so.
When you feel like the things that you crave doing are too much trouble, don’t give in. God placed those things on your heart, built you to love them, to excel at them, and to share them. Setting them aside so that you don’t inconvenience someone who doesn’t understand not only thwarts your own deep desire, but God’s plans for you.
Maybe your tinkering in the kitchen will lead somewhere you never expected. Possibly to home-cooked meals for the grief-stricken who don’t have the energy to make anything for themselves or their families. Maybe to creative and delicious recipes that feed children whose allergies keep them from childhood favorites. Or maybe it takes you into a career you love and an opportunity to help others.
Your passion for graphic design might be a blessing. It might be a welcome help to the church ladies’ group that needs to freshen its appeal and extend its reach. It might be the bartering chip used to secure music lessons for your teenager that you otherwise couldn’t afford. And it also might be a chance to create beautiful designs that touch others’ hearts and souls, bringing light into a dark day.
Your passions matter
Your passions matter because they are gifts from God. Use them and share them. Don’t ignore them.
It may be hard to see now, but years down the line, you may look back and see where your passions were the spark that fired up the rest of your life.
God works in ways we can’t anticipate because He sees our future better than we can. Follow the path He’s placed you on, even if the human world cannot see the rewards.
The rewards you get for making room for your passions will be heavenly and God-blessed. You’ll feel them in the fullness of your heart and in the knowledge that you are walking toward the purpose you were built for.
