“It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.” –Aristotle
Have you ever walked through a dark building at night, maybe after a power outage? All you can see are dark shadowy forms, grays and blacks pressing up against each other, difficult to distinguish or identify.
Our lives can feel like that sometimes. The struggles and pain and disappointments that we’ve experienced crowd together, one after another, until all we see is the dark.
Just like in that dark building, it can seem like those shadows are all there is. It can feel as though they’re crowding in and stealing all the space.
Pain and sadness can feel that way, too. They steal the breath right out of us. We feel unmotivated and joyless. We alternate between anger and desolation.
It’s at these dark times that we have to consciously look for the light. We may not see it at first because our vision is clouded by the shadows we expect to see. We’ve either forgotten where to look or forgotten what to look for.
But the light is always there. Like emergency beacons at each exit, they are there to lead you from the darkness.
Simple kindnesses, like a friend who listens while we let our pain pour out. A church member who adds us to the prayer chain. A nurse who steps in when we’re floundering with a loved one’s care.
God never leaves us to handle life’s difficulties alone. He listens to our cries, sends others to guide and care for us, and stands as an ever-present light in our darkness.
If you feel like the struggles you are going through are stealing the light from your days, look a little closer. Check each corner and crevice of your life and you will find them shining faithfully, just waiting to light your way.
May your Monday be full of light!
