What book did I finish reading this week? Sacred Parenting by Gary Thomas.
I’ve read my fair share of parenting books, and this is not one of them. This isn’t a how-to or dedicated to one style of parenting or another.
It isn’t full of quick fixes or solutions to behavior issues or adolescent angst. So, what is it?
Sacred Parenting is actually about how parenting shapes us, the parents. It’s perhaps the first parenting book I’ve ever read about parents.
My honest opinion about Sacred Parenting…
It was fascinating to read about all the ways that parenthood changes us; how we grow as people, grow our faith, and grow a legacy.
Gary Thomas always has loads of relatable stories peppered throughout his books, along with quotes and scripture that are perfect accompaniments to the points he is making.
He is a father of three (now teenagers), and his experiences, failures, and successes are shared freely. I can see myself and my own family in any one of his anecdotes.
And even though he is father, writing from a father’s perspective, I was impressed by his insight into the unique issues that mothers face. He obviously adores his wife and wasn’t blind to her struggles as they parented.
All in all, this was one of the best Christian parenting books I have ever read, and a great parenting book in general.
I would highly recommend Sacred Parenting to anyone who has children, whether it’s a newborn or a an adult child. The author takes every fight, despair, triumph, worry, and joy that we as parents go through, and reframes it as a step toward shaping our souls, and our children’s, too.
So, what are you reading this week? Have any suggestions for me?
Happy Reading!
