What was I reading this week? Trim Healthy Mama Plan by Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison.
I picked up this book because I’ve been meaning to read it for a while, but never found the right time. But since I am trying to savor my health this year, I grabbed my earbuds and downloaded the audiobook.
I don’t prescribe to “diets” in general because they are either too extreme or too restrictive. For me, these two things make them impossible to follow.
Over the years, I’ve become more and more interested in eating natural foods the way God intended them. And this is the guiding principle behind Pearl and Serene’s Trim Healthy Mama plan.
That, and lots of science. This was a rewritten and condensed version of their original book, but there was still tons of studies mentioned, as well as detailed explanations as to why some foods are good and some are bad.
My honest opinion of Trim Healthy Mama Plan…
I was prepared to take it or leave it. But they won me over with the science.
They go to great pains to explain the interplay between various foods, your insulin levels, and how your body reacts. I found this fascinating and much more convincing than a lot of other simple fad diets.
I also enjoyed their “girl talk” and asides, which apparently some people get annoyed with (but, hey, I am a lover of parenthetical asides, so…).
They do have an overabundance of cutesy names for their dishes and such, but just because it didn’t float my boat doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.
There’s an accompanying cookbook that contains all their recipes, and I have to say, the food that this plan promotes is very similar to what I like to eat. Natural, balanced, and representing all food groups. Moderation is the key.
Who is this book for?
Trim Healthy Mama Plan is great for anyone who is looking to eat a diet of foods that are balanced, natural, God-created, and satisfying. As far as diet books go, this is one of the best books I’ve read for the thorough explanations and inclusion of info so that even those with special dietary needs or at certain stages of life can follow it.
This book is for those who want to eat frugally and well, who have busy lives, and who are tired of the miracle diets and workouts that everyone everywhere is pushing. It’s nice to put health before weight, and this book does just that.
Happy Reading!
