What’s on my figurative nightstand this week? True Devotion by Dee Henderson.
When I was 14, I read the autobiography of Richard Marcinko, Rogue Warrior. The book centered on his time in the Navy and the beginnings of SEAL Team Six. I ended the book not particularly liking the man himself, but fascinated by the SEAL Teams.
Over the years, I’ve read other biographies and fictional accounts of these special ops warriors, and have always appreciated their strong will and dedication, not to mention expertise. I admire the military in general because they do something that I can’t imagine doing, and their sacrifices preserve my freedom.
So, when I saw that True Devotion revolves around the romance of a Navy SEAL and a teammate’s widow, I decided to give it a try.
This book is an Inspirational or Christian Romance. I had never read one of these before. So, I honestly wasn’t sure what I was going to get.
Would the romance be overstated, with God thrown in here and there? Would the faith elements be so strong that the storyline felt contrived and maybe unrealistic to modern dating?
My honest opinion about True Devotion…
True Devotion was much more intriguing than I thought it would be.
There was a solid storyline about a friendship that leads to romance between the main characters, Joe and Kelly. Their dialogue was realistic and fun. And it was nice to see someone in the military not being portrayed as having a potty mouth every other minute.
The suspenseful secondary plot centered on Joe’s search for the arms dealer who had killed Kelly’s husband and was about to ignite a conflict in Asia.
The book offered examples of solid faith throughout, both in the actions and speech of the characters, and in the scripture references that helped them grow in their relationships with God.
All in all, I was really satisfied with this military romance. Even the villain was nicely fleshed out. It was an easy and enjoyable read, and void of any of the tawdry or eye-rolling elements that give romance novels a bad name.
While I can’t say it’s the best Christian or inspirational romance out there (as it is my first), it was definitely worth my time.
Dee Henderson has a number of other inspirational romantic suspense novels out there. After reading True Devotion, I think I might have to check them out.
If you’re looking for a clean inspirational romance that also delivers on the action, then give this book a try.
