Are you the shepherd or the warrior?
“Skill is better than strength.” – Polish proverb
I love underdog stories. Who doesn’t? There’s nothing better than reading or watching someone perceived as weaker take on a giant and prevail.
Whether it’s a clever scheme, someone who steps in and evens the odds, or just perseverance and determination, it feels good to see brains and heart win out over brawn.
I think these tales are so popular because most of us can relate to that weaker person. We are ordinary beings living mostly ordinary lives. We don’t see ourselves as the giant, connected and powerful and unbeatable.
The first underdog story I can remember reading was the ultimate take-on-a-giant tale: David and Goliath. He was just a shepherd boy with a slingshot against a giant of a man in full battle gear.
Reading this story as an adult, I get chills because David didn’t speak to his adversary as a weaker person, as a young boy.
He spoke with the confidence of a giant himself.
Why was he so sure of himself? Why was he able to vanquish his enemy with just a slingshot?
David had skill. He knew he could do it, not because he was filled with pride in his own warrior abilities, but because he knew that God would hand Goliath over to him.
This story had all the best parts of an underdog tale: David’s determination, the cleverness of the underestimated slingshot, and someone lifting up our hero. Not to mention the pre-battle speech.
David may have started as the underdog, but with God, he became the giant. He was connected to the most powerful being in heaven and earth, unbeatable and unstoppable.
Most of us relate to the underdog, but we are, in fact, the giants when we allow God to guide us and fight for us. Our skills are God-given and can be used to right wrongs and battle for the Kingdom of God each and every day.
We are warriors in shepherds’ clothes. With the armor of God, our giants will fall before us.
As you start your week, place your battles before the Lord and let Him show you the best way to use your skills for victory. With Him, you are mightier than you know.
Have a victorious Monday!
