This week I read Book Girl by Sarah Clarkson—part memoir, part reading list, and all about books. Here are my thoughts on this tribute to the reading life.
So, what did I read this week? Book Girl by Sarah Clarkson.
Let me start out by saying that I am a huge Clarkson fan. The entire family is very creative and prolific, and they have a way of writing that just draws you in. Not in a “I feel like I’m there” way, but in a “I wish I were there” way.
Book Girl was part memoir, depicting the author’s dedicated and varied reading life, and part reading list, offering hundreds of titles and authors for the reader to try.
Reading lists can be impersonal. Sarah Clarkson found a way to make them deeply personal. She draws you into her own stories that wrapped around books, memories and plans for her own yet-unborn child and future book girl, and makes you feel like she is a good friend who just has to share this great book she’s reading with you.
My honest opinion of Book Girl…
I loved this book. It set out to explain what a book girl is and why we should embrace the beauty and wonder of being one, and it did a great job. By the end of it, I felt a renewed love for the hobby that has grounded and grown me from childhood to today.
Book Girl reminded me that reading is more than just a quiet activity in my house—it’s a connection to the world and everyone who has loved and learned through the exact same book I am reading.
If you love book recommendations, then this book provides more than 20 lists of what the author considers the best of the best. And if you are someone who is trying to diversify their reading life, then this is a helpful resource.
Book Girl was a great read. It made me just plain happy. Maybe that’s the books. Maybe that’s Sarah Clarkson’s way of explaining her unending love of them.
Or maybe it’s just the feeling you get when one book girl meets another.
Happy Reading!
