What am I reading this week? Knights in Training :Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous, and Compassionate Boys by Heather Haupt.
Knights in Training opened my eyes to something new. Boys need to be parented differently than girls.
I knew this to some extent, but for the most part, I parented my kids the same, regardless of gender. Same chores. Same discipline. And same style of praise and encouragement.
But after hearing Haupt talk about Knights in Training on a podcast, where the homeschooling mother of four explained how she was raising her boys to be knights, I was intrigued.
So, I grabbed the book from the library and dug in.
Knights in Training details the way modern boyhood and manhood have changed over the decades, even centuries. And Haupt believes that returning to the Code of Chivalry (which is way more than just being courteous to a lady) and training boys in the way of knights will guide them into adulthood as honorable, courageous, and compassionate men.
My honest review of Knights in Training…
Knights in Training was more than just a how-to or explanation of knighthood. It was also a convicting read as it challenged society’s, and my own, view of boys.
This book helped me to realize where I was letting my boys down by not instilling more discipline, character, and generosity in their hearts. I was raising them like my girls, without seeing that they needed a different touch to really challenge and grow them.
I liked how Haupt broke down each aspect of the Code of Chivalry. She offered a brief history, some personal anecdotes, and also real-life examples and practices that the reader can implement.
She also included some great resources, from chores lists to printables, to book lists, to help your own knight training get started.
I honestly don’t know if knights are my boys’ thing or not. But I’m willing to see if I can whet their appetite with stories of bravery and honor (not to mention dragon slaying) if it will start them on a path of chivalry.
Okay, I know chivalry sounds old-fashioned (and it is), but is that a bad thing? Not at all. And once you read Knights in Training, you’ll think it’s pretty awesome, too.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who has boys in their life. This will open their eyes to a different way of parenting, one that seeks to build the character of boys without changing the innate wildness and physicality that they were blessed with. This book is a great read for any parent.
Happy Reading!
