What did I finish reading this week? Meet Me at the Museum by Anne Youngson.
This was my February book club selection from the Modern Mrs. Darcy. What I love about book clubs is that they introduce me to books that I probably wouldn’t pick up on my own.
This is a fictional story of two people who are past middle age and questioning things in their lives. They also have a shared love and fascination with the Tollund Man, which is a perfectly preserved body from the Iron Age. It’s this interest that leads two strangers in two different countries to begin a correspondence.
My honest opinion of Meet Me at the Museum…
My opinion of this book fluctuated as I read. There were times when I enjoyed it and times when I was sure I was not going to like it. But I guess what matters is how I felt about it in the end, right?
I was a little disconcerted by the lack of dialogue. Since this book is written entirely in letter form, everything is told after the fact. If you read my thoughts on Pride and Prejudice, you know that I like dialogue in my fiction.
But in the case of Meet Me at the Museum, the lack of dialogue was balanced by the boon of having the letter-writer’s thoughts and analysis expressed about each situation. Sort of like having alternating first-person points of view.
I loved the portraits each of the main characters painted of their children, spouses, and friends. Even though I have never been to England or Denmark, I could clearly picture both places from the descriptions each writer gave the other.
So, what was my honest opinion of Meet Me at the Museum when all was said and done?
I liked it. There was a moment of doubt near the end, but the author finished the book in a way that satisfied and pleased me more than I thought possible at the beginning of the book.
Who is this book for?
If you like mature characters, international locales, history, and analysis of both humanity and our humanness, then this is a great book for you.
This is also a great book club read because there are tons of subjects that are introduced that just yearn for further and varied discussion.
Meet Me at the Museum is perfect for anyone looking for a contemplative read that looks at the choices we make and how they shape our lives.
Happy Reading!
