What book did I just finish reading? The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker.
Back in 2014, I came across Joshua Becker’s blog, Becoming Minimalist. It was the first time I’d really read a first-hand account of minimalism and I was fascinated. At the time, we were considering selling our house and the thought of less stuff to pack and move was enticing.
The Minimalist Home touches on not just the ideas behind minimalism and the benefits, but also the practical steps you can take to minimize the stuff that is crowding your home. Joshua Becker also makes a case for minimizing the house itself.
My honest opinion about The Minimalist Home…
The Minimalist Home is a great resource for anyone who wants to start their minimalism journey, but isn’t sure where to start. It’s also entertaining and interesting, written in a conversational and informative style that makes it anything but dry.
Even after reading a lot on the subject over the years, I thought this book did an amazing job of breaking it down, room by room. There are a lot of great books on the subject out there, but I think The Minimalist Home is one of the best. Here’s why:
- Easy to hard. Big jobs take time and can kill momentum. The author starts with the easiest rooms, so those wins can push your further.
- Checklists. He brings you back to the main reasons for decluttering the rooms as you go.
- Facts. There are plenty of statistics, facts, and case studies in here for your inner wonk.
- Ideals. This isn’t just about stuff and having too much. He talks about how this will change your life, and how it changed his.
After reading The Minimalist Home, I felt inspired and motivated, so I talked to my family about making some changes. We have already started diving into our more cluttered areas.
I want to have a more peaceful experience when I enter my home. I want to spend less time cleaning and straightening. And I want to put my time and energy into my family and the important things in life, instead of maintaining the things that I have. I bet you do, too.
This book not only shows us how to get there, it makes us believe that we will get there.
The Minimalist Home is the perfect book for anyone who is curious about minimalism, who is ready to take the plunge, or who wants to see the big picture behind these changes before getting started.
But I would recommend it to anyone because you never know when someone might be ready for a simpler life.
Happy Reading!

That does sound like an excellent read. I have been thinking about this topic and slowly moving in that direction.
