What did I finish reading recently? Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfrey.
I’m going to be honest and admit that I am a fan of romantic comedies. When I need a break from realism, there is nothing like a romcom movie or book to suspend my disbelief, pick up my spirits, and make me laugh.
So, I was pretty excited for Waiting for Tom Hanks. Like the main character, I don’t have a thing for Tom Hanks, per se (though he seems like a nice guy in every role he plays), but the idea of Tom Hanks is alluring.
Nice guy, great for bantering, good heart. Like most people, I have seen Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, so I appreciated the type.
Annie Cassidy in Waiting for Tom Hanks is waiting for that type. Growing up on Nora Ephron romcoms means that her vision for her life is heavily influenced by the genre. She’s not unrealistic or kooky, though. She’s just a girl who hopes to one day have her meet-cute and find her soul mate.
An aspiring screenwriter, she takes a job on the set of a movie coming to her Ohio town. There she meets Drew Danforth, who is the exact opposite of what she wants. Or so she assumes.
My honest review of Waiting for Tom Hanks…
First off, I want to say that you don’t need to be a watcher of romantic comedies to appreciate this book. But if you are, you will really appreciate this book.
The author peppers the story with references to iconic romcoms, and if you catch them, they just make the jokes funnier.
I really liked Waiting for Tom Hanks. Its tongue-in-cheek humor made me laugh out loud and the characters were eclectic and interesting. Despite the fact that the book is based on a somewhat formulaic genre, it’s fresh and different.
The heroine is searching for her own romantic comedy, not realizing she’s already in one. The hero seems to know he’s in one, which only confuses her more.
The secondary characters are great, from the best friend who doesn’t believe in love, to the uncle who lives for fantasy and comic-cons, to the blind date that keeps reappearing, as stinky as ever.
I was really sad to get to the end of Waiting for Tom Hanks, even though I did race through it. But I’m excited to see that Kerry Winfrey has a second book coming out next year about Annie’s best friend.
One book in, and I’m already invested in the characters… now that’s a good book!
I’d recommend Waiting for Tom Hanks to anyone who loves romantic comedies, witty banter, and characters that can be both eccentric and perfectly relatable. This is a light read, but it’s not fluff, so it’s great for a little escapist fun this season.
Happy Reading!
